The Tools, One by One

Claude Pro — $20/month

I debated whether to include a paid AI tool in a “cheap stack” article. Then I remembered: Claude is the reason I ship 3x faster.

Code reviews, copywriting, debugging, brainstorming pricing strategies at 11pm — Claude Pro handles all of it. For a solo maker with no team, it’s not a luxury. It’s your entire staff.

If you’re choosing between Claude Pro and any other tool on this list, choose Claude Pro.

Why not ChatGPT? Personal preference. Claude is better at long-context reasoning and code. Use what works for you — the point is: have an AI assistant, and pay for the good tier.

Vercel — Free (Hobby plan)

Zero-config deploys, instant previews, global CDN. The Hobby plan covers everything you need until you’re making real money.

The moment you hit your first $1K MRR, upgrade to Pro ($20/mo) for analytics and better limits. Until then — free.

Supabase — Free

Postgres database, authentication, file storage, edge functions — all in one. The free tier is genuinely generous: 500MB database, 1GB file storage, 50K monthly active users.

You will not outgrow the Supabase free tier before you have money to pay for Supabase Pro. That’s the point.

GitHub — Free

Nothing to explain here. Your code lives here. Free for unlimited public and private repos.

Notion — Free

Roadmap, meeting notes, product specs, user research — all in Notion. The free tier includes unlimited blocks, which removed the last reason to pay.

Use it as your second brain for the product. Don’t over-engineer it: one page for roadmap, one for ideas, one for user feedback. That’s it.

Lemon Squeezy — Free ($0 upfront, 5% + fees per transaction)

This one surprises people. Lemon Squeezy is a Merchant of Record — meaning they handle payments, VAT, sales tax, and compliance in every country for you.

As a solo maker, you do not want to deal with EU VAT, Australian GST, or US state taxes. Lemon Squeezy takes 5% + payment fees and makes all of that disappear.

What’s Missing (On Purpose)

No project management tool. Notion handles this fine at the solo stage. Linear is great, but unnecessary before you have a team or complex sprints.

No design tool. If you need design, Figma free tier is excellent. It’s not in the core stack because not every maker needs it daily.

No customer support tool. At early stage, handle support via email. When you’re drowning in tickets, add Crisp or Intercom. Not before.

No SEO tool. Google Search Console is free and sufficient to start. Ahrefs at $129/mo is for when SEO is your primary acquisition channel.
